Traveling woman

Going down the highway gives me so much time to think. The car becomes my private sanctuary. It protects me. I see all the people out there in my immediate world, but they are anonymous. I am one with them, yet I am totally separate and immune from intrusion. I can be absolutely silent and listen to nothing but tires meeting pavement; the clickety clack of my new tires on worn out patched up roadbed. Or, I can play any genre music that suits my momentary mood, and sometimes laugh at NPR's "Wait, wait! Don't tell me!"or I sing along, as loud as I can, to my treasured oldies. I stop when and if I want to, and get to play tourist if the fancy strikes me.... I am a woman. Alone. It is a very good time to be alone. Everyone should have the opportunity to travel coast to coast in solitude.

A liberal in the wilderness.

For too many years I have been a liberal in an ultra conservative world. "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen.....". Texas is bad enough, especially during the G.W. years. But at least there were some Texas Democrats fighting the Good Ol' Boys in the Texas legislature and on the national political arena. Not very effective. The Reps, always afraid of the voters that they had to, from time to time, answer to, did everything necessary to sway the vote their way, including engaging Carl Rove and moving district bounderies one way or the other that would reflect a favorable demographic, and thereby ensure a favorable outcome at election time. But at least there were democrats and a few die-hard liberals in Texas, In Wyoming there are none. Just me and Roger. Living in the Good Ol' Boy State of Texas has not been the best of times for me. 25 or so years of my life, and all I have is a feeling of political opression. And that is the problem with those of us who are leaning a little bit left of the median. We are the new opressed in the United States today.
